Not only Harper, but DION apologises (a few days ago) on behalf of Canada for the disgustofuck travesty of the residential schools.
Now, I am impressed. For old rich white men in government to show concern for people who aren't more old rich white men is a rare-ass thing indeed. But here's Steven Harper saying 'we fucked up, it was shameful, we are sorry' and DION, Mr. Footmouth, whose total lack of party support negates the possibility of this being an attempt at a thunder steal - Dion stands up and says, 'know what - the liberals have been dumbfucks about this, we haven't said anything in all the years we were in power, that fails and we are sorry.'
I did an ass dance around my little workroom. Thankfully no one saw this!
The article in my little hippie freeb paper regarding this unusual display of compassion and consideration said what I thought: hopefully this will be a beginning and not an end.
This does not make everything all better, and no one expects it to. This is a beginning. It's a foundation being laid.
We like to think that, in this day and age, we have gone beyond the need for women's rights movements and anti-racism movements and affirmative action. Sadly, we haven't. Why is this the case? There is no one reason. Fact is, society is a deeply broken OS, and until we address its buggy programming, and that buggy programming's poisonous impact on each and every human being who must function within society, we will remain vulnerable to crashing, fuckups, IRQ vomit, and lies about life being a zero-sum game with only a limited amount of stuff (money, power, food, space) to go around.
It is fixable. It will take time, but we have time. We will move forward, as we must. We cannot regress or stagnate, or we will flounder and expire. We were granted the capability to learn, to evolve, to adapt, to build, to learn, to teach, to understand. To ignore these capacities of ours is to demean ourselves.
We will progress because it is in our nature to progress. We are human beings. We possess the capacity for compassion. To be compassionate is not weak. To be compassionate is a great strength. To allow yourself give a fuck is terrifying.
People will disappoint you, people will disgust you, people will act in ways that leave you shocked and horrified. We have the capacity to be thoughtless asshats, too. Being a thoughtless asshat is the coward's way out. It's very fucking simple to not care. You hardly have to exert a lick of effort to go along aping a /b/tard, pretending that you are the only real one in the universe and that you and your few poodles are the only beings who matter, that bad things only happen to the deserving. Retreating, as F Scott Fitzgerald puts it, back into vast carelessness and hiding behind the imaginary walls that separate 'us' from 'them'.
Sooner or later the Great Cosmic Cluebat will descent and line-drive you into awakening, though.
Perhaps the GCC struck Harper and Dion. Perhaps they only did it for political reasons. Perhaps it's both. But their doing what they did is a step. It is an admission of fuck-uppery. Therefore, I say unto them 'thank you - now please keep on keeping on because that was goddamned cool'.
